Let’s have a look at some of the famous Handicrafts of Andhra Pradesh.

Kondapalli toys Andhra Pradesh

Themes include snippets from mythology, folklore, rural life, birds and animals. The most notable one is the Dasavatharam. Entire families are involved in the process of making toys. First, the wood is treated to a slow heating process to dry its moisture content. The wood is then cut out and the edges are smooth finished. The limbs of the toys are carved separately and later joined to the body.

The carving implements involved in the making of these toys are axe, chisel hammer and drill. Tamarind paste acts as a glue to join the parts. The latter step involves colouring with either oil and water-colours or vegetable dyes and enamel paints which are applied based on the type of toys.

The paintbrush is made of goat’s hair. In the old days, natural colours extracted from stones, herbs, root and gums were used while today, both watercolours and oil paints are increasingly being used.

Kalamkari Painting Andhra Pradesh

Kalamkari comes from to words:- Kalam- pen and Kari- work, i.e, artwork done using a pen. This ancient art is basically done on cotton or silk fabric with tamarind using natural dyes.

Process of Making Kalamkari Design

The process of making this piece of beauty involves 23 arduous steps of dyeing, bleaching, hand painting, block printing, starching, cleaning and more. Motifs drawn in Kalamkari painting include mythological figures, peacocks, flowers, elephants, horses and fish.

Kalamkari art primarily uses colours like indigo, mustard, rust, black and green extracted from natural sources. Black colour is extracted by blending jaggery, water and iron fillings. Yellow is derived from pomegranate peels and blue is obtained from indigo.

Mixing yellow and blue together gives the colour blue and red colour is obtained from the bark of madder. Flowers are also used in abundance to extract colours. There are two types of Kalamkari art- Srikalahasti style and Machilipatnam style.

In the Srikalahashi Style of Kalamkari the kalam or pen is used for freehand drawing of the subject and filling in the colours. It is entirely hand worked. This style is used mostly to narrate the religious myths and epic stories on the fabric. Originating around temples this style has a strong religious connection. One can come across this style in temple hangings, chariot banners and scrolls.

The Machilipatnam Style of Kalamkari also known as Pedana Kalamkari involves vegetable dyed block painting of a fabric produced at the town of Pedana in Andhra Pradesh. This style of art evolved during the rule of Mughal dynasty and practiced by Golconda Sultanate.

It mainly uses vegetable dyes and colours extracted from minerals which are applied onto the fabric with the help of wooden blocks. Alum is used in the making of natural dyes and also while treating the fabric. It also ensures stability of the colour in Kalamkari fabric.

Myrobalan and buffalo milk are also used to treat the fabric. Motifs in the Machilipatnam style include scenes from religious epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata, mythological figures, flowers, peacocks and scenes from daily life. Having enjoyed Mughal patronage for  a significant amount of time, it also displays some Persian influences.

In the recent times, you can get Kalamkari bedsheets, Lungis, Curtains, Sarees and Salwar Kameez.

In the modern time these handcrafted works of art are being replaced by the digital medium. To walk with the times, digitally printed Kalamkari work is being done on silk, mammal, cotton and synthetic sarees and sold to meet the growing demand as digital is easier than original Kalamkari work.
